Handsworth Traditional Sword Dancers

Handsworth Traditional Sword Dancers, one of the few surviving traditional sword teams of the UK, hail from Sheffield. Handsworth, now on the outskirts of the city, was until recently a mining village. The dancers worked in the mines or steelworks so were not conscripted during the two World Wars, meaning HTSD have an unbroken tradition of over 120 years. The Handsworth Dance, a fast moving, highly technical dance that is mesmerising to watch, differs from many other longsword dances in that it is done mostly to a run-step. Look out for the dragoon-type jackets, white trousers, black boots and gaiters.
